Megan Hanford, 26, is part of the gallery’s latest exhibit by Brian Reed. She stands fully naked under a suspended web made of various objects including shark eggs and teeth, beads and clay pipes. Her nakedness is essential, Mr. Reed explained, “so she can be fully at the center of that connectivity” of energy.

The line between art and public indecency has continually been tested, from Spencer Tunick’s mass nude outdoor photo shoots that started in the early 1990s to Amy Gunderson’s going topless at the Mermaid Parade in Brooklyn in 2001.

Some say that as long as it is in the name of artistic expression, you may appear naked on any street corner, storefront or other public space. Others, however, say that the law does not allow one to impose nudity on others, especially for commercial reasons.

The campaign, which was devised for a pressure group supporting the rights of non-smokers, has been attacked as "scandalous" and "potentially counter-productive" by feminist and pro-family campaigners.

The non-smokers' rights group says it does not care if adults are shocked by its posters. Gérard Audureau, the president of Les Droits des Non-fumeurs (The Rights of Non-smokers), the pressure group which commissioned the ads, said: "Very few anti-smoking campaigns catch the attention of the young. You have to use extreme images to make them take notice."

The sex club, named "Element6", is temporary and only part of a project by Swiss artist Christoph Buechel.

By night, the "swingers" carry out orgies among the artworks. Sex acts are however not allowed during day, and gallery visitors can wander among the club's king-size beds, erotic pictures, bar and whirlpool baths to view the art.

The museum is hoping to reignite the original controversy that surrounded Klimt's 1902 "Beethoven Frieze", an artwork that was once thought of as obscene and pornographic because of the way women's bodies were depicted.

The room where the frieze is exhibited is locked at night for security reasons. But it too has its share of the sex club's mattresses, surrounded by fake tropical plants and a life-size stuffed lion.

The exhibition runs until April 18.

There are now 38 sex clubs and brothel in the Lugano area. And more are planned in order to accommodate the thousands of customers who pour over the border from Italy, where brothels are illegal. Around 80 per cent of the men who pay for sex in the area are thought to be Italian.

There's something respectable about a porn movie that you watch inside a renowned art gallery.

I doubt LaBruce bothers much about making art lovers feel respectable. In fact, the artist doesn't seem too eager to drawing a line between art and porn. He told Salon: "All of my work has been about that line. You can situate yourself on either side of the line without really altering the work itself. I could take a picture for Honcho magazine, but can take the same image and put it in a frame in an art gallery, and it becomes art. For me that speaks to the arbitrary nature of those labels." A soft-core version of L.A. Zombie will tour film festivals this year. You can expect to find the hard-core DVD gracing the shelves of your favourite sex shop in the spring.

LA Zombie was shot in Los Angeles. Guerrilla-style. With almost no budget. The main protagonist rises from the sea, with as much clout and allure as Ursula Andress herself in that famous Bond scene. He's a zombie or maybe he's just a bit deranged and fancies himself as an undead creature. He sports canine teeth and is dressed like a homeless. Good looking young guys get killed or die in accidents. He finds them, gives them the fuck of life right into their wound, they open their eyes. They have become zombie too and lead the life of tramps around LA. People don't seem to even notice their presence.
